La Catrina

José Guadalupe Posada’s “La Calavera Catrina” (1910-1913) still reminds us of the joy of life, cultura, and beauty. This iconic image reinvented the original first appearance of “ The Lady of Death”, the Aztec Goddess Mictecacihuatl (Mitcal)- queen of the underworld. She protects the bones of the dead and presides over death festivals like the modern day Dia De Los Muertos. Today we celebrate Arte, Cultura, Life, and Death and honor these indigenous beliefs so our ancestors’ huesitos are protected throughout this lifetime.
